The End is Nigh

21 Feb

I don’t even know if I’ve said that right but what I mean is I have made the difficult decision to give away blogging.  This may be a phase such as the many times this has happened before or it might just be permanent this time round.  I just want to thank anyone who has read this blog or followed me or left a comment, you have made me smile.  I won’t go into all the boring reasons why I am not blogging anymore – it’s not thrilling news really, trust me.  I just wanted to say goodbye…

…so goodbye dear readers xo

ps. you can still find me on instagram at krismakes.  I’ve also closed my zibbet shop but I may have some offerings up on my facebook page krismakes.

new directions in 2015 and the truth about blogging

3 Jan

Hello all and Happy New Year to you!  A brand spanking new year is an amazing gift isn’t it?  A huge blank slate.  A time to plan, to start over, and to dream of all the wonderful things you can accomplish this year.

I have been thinking a lot in the past six months about this blog, whether to continue doing it, feeling guilty about not posting frequently enough, toying with the idea of creating other blogs for other topics, wondering if anyone still reads this one?

If you’ve been here before you’ll know that my blog is predominantly a craft blog with a few wee sprinkles of other parts of my life.  I’ve read a lot of blog tips and advice and one major point has always been to find your niche and stick to it like glue.  I always thought crafts, particular paper crafts was my niche and my passion but honestly I have many passions and I really want to share them with anyone who will listen (or read them).

So I have made the executive decision to write about all my passions right here on this single blog.  The truth about blogging is that you are the owner of your blog, it’s yours, you are in controland you have absolute power.  I like the sound of that.  It really comes down to this – if I want to write about plucking my eyebrows then I can and will, even though it’s not craft related (or it could be if I plucked them into a pretty pattern I suppose).  In life there is always going to lots of advice around about anything and everything but in the end you need to go with your gut or your heart or whichever body part you wish.  This to ME feels like the right thing.

Yes my dear friends there will be a shift of focus in 2015, but don’t worry I still intend on posting lots of crafty goodness, after all it is a rather large passion of mine!

Wondering what to expect from now on?  Here’s a list of some of the topics I’d like to talk about in 2015…

Simplifying

Cooking/Baking

Decluttering

Organising

Finance and Saving Money

Cleaning

Gardening (or my poor attempts at it)

Relationships

Careers/Early Retirement

Arts and Crafts

Blogging

Health

It’s a pretty big list I know but I’m hoping there will be enough variety for everyone.  Are you planning any big changes in 2015?  Which direction are you going in?  I’d love to hear about it and if you’re a fellow blogger please leave a comment so I can come visit!

Lovely Letters

27 Feb

Hello World!

Lately I have been writing my little heart out – yes snail mail is in people.  And it’s back for good too.  After receiving so many nice letters from my new friend Jayne I decided to place a little ad on Instagram seeking penpals.  I had a great response and have started building new friendships.  If you haven’t seen all the superb snail mail on IG you must go check them out, search for #penpals #snailmail #happymail and so on.  Some of the letters are simply stunning.  Anyway I thought I’d share some of the nice mail I have been receiving, if you want more follow me on IG – I’m easy to find just look for krismakes.20140227-191307.jpg

I was very spoilt by my generous friend Jayne at Christmas, look at all the pressies she sent me.  Don’t worry I spoilt her right back with a Happy New Year package.

Chantelle is one of my new penpals and we have a lot of common interests like Thermomixing and healthy eating.  Love that baby doll bookmark.

Here’s more awesome mail from Jayne, you should hear me squeel when I see mail from her in my letterbox.  Mind you it’s not just about the goodies she includes – she writes the best letters and I feel like we’ve been friends all my life.

So do you write letters to anyone?

Penpal and Correspondence Organization

19 Jan

Howdy lovely folks!

Today I’m going to share a little folder I made to help me stay organised with my correspondence to friends.  Recently I got back into penpalling thanks to looking at all the lovely mail going on at Instagram.  Have you checked it out?  Look under the hashtags #snailmail #penpals #happymail and so on and you’ll find a plethora of creative arty envelopes and mailings.  It’s very inspiring.  So I have about 10 penpals including my best friend, this is new for us and I’m quite excited as she lives 4 and a half hours away so we usually chat via text messages.  Later on I’d also like to write to my niece and my god daughter as I think it would be fun and exciting for them to receive some good old snail mail.

20140111-165409.jpgSo with getting to know all these wonderful new people in my life I thought it would be nice to keep a bit of a record on each of them, just with some basic info like birthdays, children or partners names, pets etc as well as likes and dislikes.  This way if I forget, say, what their fave colour is I can go straight to their little profile and check rather than trying to find it in goodness knows how many letters they might have sent me.

20140111-165520.jpg

I just think this is a super cool way to keep track of lots of penpals or if like me if you have a cruddy memory and forget these sorts of things.  I just made it on a spreadsheet (my fave way to do things) and tried to think about what the important info is that I need handy.  I have a bunch of A5 binders for some reason, so I made my forms so that I can fold them in half and slot them into a plastic pocket in the folder.

I also wanted a way to make sure I replied in a timely manner.  I try to reply straight away but sometimes life gets in the way and before you know it it’s been three weeks and you still have written back.  So I made some columns to fill in when I received my penpal’s letter and when I sent one back.  As soon as I get a letter and read it I pop the letter in the front of the pocket for that person and write the date received in the back, then when I get a chance to do some correspondence writing I just grab my folder and start writing to the person who’s letter has been there the longest.  I’ll also pop small things in the front pocket ready to send with my next letter like stickers, tea sachets, stationary and so on.

I’ve only been using this system a few weeks so time will tell if anything needs tweaking, but it’s been really fabulous so far.  I’m getting my letters sent out in a timely manner, I know who’s birthday it is and I can collect little odds and ends relevant to my penpal’s likes and dislikes.

Button Badge Brooch Pin

5 Apr

As previously mentioned I’ve been hard at it….making badges that is. Punching images from discarded books and comics is a tad time consuming as I have to get the image centered and “just so”. Also the newspaper-like comics do not like to play nice with the circle punch so most times I have to bust out the scissors.
BUT it’s all worth it – don’t you agree?

Hands Free Reading

23 Mar

I heart my book seat very much. I found him at my local op shop and overheard the ladies out the back pondering what it was. I couldn’t believe my luck when they brought him out with a $1.50 price tag! He looks brand new and though I took a chance on him just being another gimmicky product….he is perfect.

I no longer have to stick my knees up in bed to hold heavy books. I can sip away at my beverage of choice without putting my book down and the one I’m really looking forward to? In winter I can shove my cold hands back under the covers between page turns. Ahh bliss.

Time for a re-vamp

3 Feb

Over the next few weeks you may see some weird stuff going on here at krismakes.com.  I plan onto giving this blog a complete overhaul to bring up to date for 2013.  I hope to still post in between but if anything odd happens while you’re visiting, it’s probably just a technical glitch.

Hope everyone is having a fabulous 2013 so far!
